Bainbridge Island has been a sea of viruses this winter. Pertussis cases, pneumonia and other crap have been rampant @ BHS. Kieran even came down with Mono over winter break. Yikes. Anyhow, Ellis avoided most of it, it seemed until she got pneumonia and couldn't fight it off. It turned into several other infections and whacked out her systems. After switching antibiotics around to little avail we went to Children's ER for help. And wouldn't you know, the found out several crappy things.
One of her anti-rejection medications is carefully regulated and due to the sicknesses running through her body, it was WAY out of balance. This medication can reduce the function of the pancreas which at those high levels it really did.
This pushed Ellis into a Diabetic situation. Diabetic ketoacidosis. So currently she's being treated as a Type I Diabetic with daily long acting injection shots and short-term corrective insulin shots throughout the day. That and all the glucose checks are really pissing off the Patrick clan - especially Ellis.
She's back at school and crew after missing three weeks; two from being sick and one in the hospital.
But her main cardiologist and several research articles point to the likelihood of a possible reversible of this diagnosis. So, please cross your fingers and say your prayers that this is just a temporary situation for our trooper.
We were able to hit some sunshine and rest just out of the hospital. And Kieran was accepted to the University of Arizona for this fall!
